According to the a new report from the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia entitled “Mode Shift: Philadelphia’s Two-Wheeled Revolution in Progress,” Philadelphia now boasts some of the highest rates of bicycling in the entire country.

Not only that, but of the nation's 10 biggest cities, Philadelphia's bicycle mode share (which means the percentage of commuters who bike to work) is twice as high as the next-best major city, Chicago.

Some additional key facts:

Bicycle commuting increased 151% in Philadelphia between 2000 and 2009, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
Center City and South Philly rank among the top 25 most bicycled areas in the entire country

You can read the full report here (PDF).

And don’t forget that National Bike To Work Day is Friday, May 20; you can sign up for the coalition's 2011 Commuter Challenge starting that day and running all summer.

Plus, as we reported recently, Mayor Nutter has announced that the city will be adding two critical new bike lanes to Center City in June a southbound lane to 10th Street and a northbound lane to 13th Street.

Some great news to kick off a spring and summer season of gorgeous bike-friendly weather!
